Choosing a Solid Wooden Worktop Surface for Big Kitchens
When deciding upon a new solid wooden worktop surface for spacious kitchens, there are a number of key elements to consider. Our comprehensive collection of wood worktops will add a unique aesthetic to any room, and in a large kitchen it is important to choose a worktop with the right colour, texture and stave formation to suit your space.
Select the right stave construction

At Worktop Express we offer solid timber worktops in a variety of construction types. Our standard worktops are constructed from a number of staves that vary in length and measure 40mm wide. For a more luxurious surface, our Deluxe worktops offer a similar construction, but are made using extra-wide 90mm staves. Our most lavish choice comes in the form of our full stave worktops, which – as the name suggests – are made from 90mm wide staves that run the entire length of the worktop.
In a large kitchen, it is important to consider how your worktop will look alongside other kitchen furnishings and appliances. If you are considering solid wood worktops for a large kitchen island, we recommend choosing full stave worktops to create an undeniably opulent look.
For the rest of your kitchen, we’d recommend opting for Deluxe worktops over the standard variant: these worktops show off as much of the beautiful natural timber as possible due to their extra-wide staves.
Order extra-large worktops
The vast majority of our worktops are available in widths of up to 960mm as standard, though we recently introduced a selection of our oak and Prime Oak worktops in expansive 1240mm wide options. These wide surfaces are the ideal choice for islands in a large kitchen, and are double the width of our standard 620mm surfaces.
Whilst these extra-wide worktops are not available from stock in any other timber type, our skilled fabrication team are able to biscuit join worktops together to create a very large, seamless surface.
Super-sized worktops can be ordered directly from our supplier in lengths of up to 6000mm and widths of up to 1500mm (with a maximum width of 3000mm). They can also be manufactured in sizes up to 60mm thick – 20mm thicker than our standard range of worktops.
Consider floating shelves for additional storage
Once you have picked a perfect set of worktops to suit your large kitchen, it’s important to make the most of any available wall space – this could be useful for storing kitchen wares or displaying your finest collectables.
Worktop Express not only specialises in wooden worktops, we also stock a variety of solid wood floating shelves that have hidden stainless steel brackets. These wooden shelves are ideal for bridging wall cabinets and give a sense of kitchen continuity when coupled with matching worktops.
Our floating shelves start at only £22.50 for a 300mm wide oak floating shelf, but custom options can be ordered using our bespoke solid wood floating shelves calculator (up to 2000mm in width and in the majority of our worktop timbers).
