How do I maintain and care for laminate worktops?

Question

“I recently visited your showroom in Gloucestershire and liked the look of your grey slate-effect laminate worktops. They looked great with the painted cabinets, and I want to re-create this look at home! Please could you provide me with some information on how to maintain and care for these worktops?”

Answer

The beauty of laminate surfaces is that they are incredibly easy to maintain. Once installed, they simply require occasional cleaning with warm soapy water and a soft cloth. We advise against using an abrasive sponge or scourer, as this can scratch the surface.

Caring for laminate worktops is as simple as that; however, we also have several recommendations that will help you keep your worktops in excellent condition:

  • It is good practice to mop up any spillages immediately, using a clean dry cloth, particularly around tap holes and worktop joins. It is best not to leave damp clothes or sponges on the top front edge of the worktop, where it can be more susceptible to water ingress.
  • Never place hot saucepans or dishes on the work surface; we suggest using a protective mat or pot stand.
  • Avoid chopping directly onto the worktop. Always use a chopping board or worktop saver.
  • Laminate worktops are resistant to most household products, though not completely stain-proof. If the worktop becomes marked with a tough stain such as ink, polish, nail varnish or adhesive, apply a small amount of organic solvent – such as acetone – to a damp, soft cloth, and rub over the mark in a circular motion.
