The historic town of Romford in Essex has been an industrious area for many centuries, developing from earlier years of agricultural farming to more contemporary industries. In the 14th century, a windmill supported local trade by grinding corn and grain, and was later followed by textiles manufacturing in the 1500s. Leather tanning continued to thrive in the town until the early 1800s. By this stage, commerce had progressed with the establishment of a large brewery, four windmills, and many businesses related to the weaving, charcoal and metalwork industries. As the town prospered, trade developed and diversified to include candle-making, comb-making, flour milling and bottling of mineral water.

Factors in the town's industrial success certainly include joining the growing railway infrastructure in 1839, connecting Romford to the nearby Tilsbury Docks. Today, visitors are drawn to the area by events such as racing at one of the few remaining Greyhound Stadiums in the London area, as well as by the stunning estates of Valentines Mansion and Gardens in nearby Ilford. The famous Romford Market also attracts crowds on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays and, dating back to origins in 1247, is now considered one of the largest and best street markets in the south-east.
