A booming town for industry, Halifax is the birthplace of Mackintosh's confectionary brands such as Rolo, Quality Street and Rowntrees, headed up by John Mackintosh, 'The Toffee King'. Both Halifax Bank and Yorkshire Bank were founded in Halifax, and it has been an important centre for the manufacturing of wool and other fabrics since the 15th century, at one time housing one of the world's largest textile factories. Throughout the 19th century, the town continued to grow with large influxes of wealth drawn from cotton, wool and carpet manufacturing.

The eye-catching, classically styled architecture and interiors of Halifax's Town Hall were conceived by Charles Barry (who also designed the Houses of Parliament), and include stunningly ornate features such as a remarkable carved, tile-effect spire and a striking, domed entrance hall. In 2008, Architecture Today magazine named the building one of the ten most spectacular in Britain.
