A wealthy trade before the introduction of railway travel, stagecoaches were widely embraced in the market town of Doncaster during the 1500s, for the transportation of people and goods. Typically drawn by four horses, this popular method of transport predictably led to the breeding of horses in Doncaster, which eventually developed into the beginning of horseracing there. The town is now probably best-known for the Doncaster Cup, which first took place over Cantley Common in 1766, and was the earliest significant race in Doncaster's history. The oldest official horseracing event in the world, the Doncaster Cup takes place on the penultimate day of the town's St. Leger Festival, and draws thousands of visitors to the racecourse each September.
A large historical town in South Yorkshire, Doncaster was founded by the Romans, and many iconic Roman and Georgian architectural features are scattered throughout, reflecting the town's journey through the ages. With its marketplace still located in the very same square where it first originated, Doncaster has hugely benefitted from its position on the Great North Road.
