Which screws should I use on wooden worktops?

Question

“I ordered some worktops from you recently and am about to install them, but I don’t know which screws are the best to use with my oak worktops. Any advice is appreciated!”

Answer

We understand you are querying which screws would be best to use in conjunction with stretcher plates to attach your solid wood worktop to kitchen cabinets? You’re right to be cautious, not all types of screws are suitable to use with wood and can cause problems over time. Steel screws can leave a blue stain on the worktop, whilst iron screws will rust, weakening greatly and staining the worktop.

We would recommend you use ¾” / 19mm Pan head pozi BZP (Bright Zinc Plated) self-tapping screws, each with a washer between the screw head and the stretcher plate, to allow the worktop to slide over the washer if it undergoes any expansion or contraction. Note that with angled stretcher plates, it is important that you use the slot which runs across, and not parallel to the grain.
