All About Solid Wood Cutlery Trays: A Worktop Express® Nutshell Guide
We recently updated our range of solid wood cutlery drawers to include a variety of new hardwood choices and additional sizes including expansive 710mm, 810mm and 910mm options, for those with suitable large kitchens and plenty of cutlery and utensils to store. These sizes joined our existing 310mm, 410mm and 510mm drawer inserts to create a collection that complements all manner of drawer sizes and kitchen designs.
Initially we only offered our cutlery trays in beech or oak, but we have now widened our range to include exotic iroko and black American walnut timbers. These new additions are perfect accessories for kitchens that are the proud homes of one of our darker, more luxurious solid wood worktops.

How are they made?
All of our solid wood cutlery drawer trays are made using our highly advanced CNC machine. The machine can be set up to cut almost any size and shape of recess into a piece of solid wood, and can even engrave designs into the wood – as you can see above with the three main compartments in our inserts.
Once a member of our fabrication team has chosen the required size for the drawer insert, the CNC machine gets to work. It takes approximately 5-10 minutes to cut the insert (depending on its size), after which the insert is removed and sanded by hand to ensure all the compartments are free of imperfections. After this, the insert will be incredibly smooth and primed ready you to apply a coating of Rustins Danish Oil, or – should you prefer – a paint colour of your choice.
Oak Cutlery Drawers
The original – and still one of our most popular – cutlery tray option. Our oak cutlery inserts are made out of a block of solid oak hardwood, which is constructed in the same way as our oak worktops (by piecing together a number of smaller oak staves). It’s then cut with our precision CNC machine to create a smooth and hard-wearing drawer insert.
Because of the timber’s resilience, oak is an ideal hardwood from which to manufacture drawer inserts. It of course matches perfectly with our selection of oak worktops, and suits a variety of kitchen settings, from contemporary to classic. Prices start at only £50 for a 310mm insert.
Beech Cutlery Drawers
Beech has always been a popular worktop material, and is also incredibly good value for money – as hardwoods go. Our beech cutlery drawer inserts are also great value, and are cut from the same material as our worktops, machined to the right size, then sanded to a smooth finish.
Beech is a warm and mellow hardwood which not only sits well with matching beech worktops, but also works with many other types. Like our worktops, we recommend finishing them with a layer of Rustins Danish Oil, but alternatively they can be painted to match kitchen cabinet doors. Prices start at just £48.50 for a 310mm insert.
Iroko Cutlery Drawers
Iroko is an exotic African hardwood, which has proved popular in both modern and traditional kitchen interiors. The blend of bronze and golden hues makes a fantastic work surface, and the same hardwood iroko worktops are used to create these sumptuous cutlery drawer inserts, too.
Available in a range of sizes, these iroko inserts start off a light toffee colour, but after a healthy coating of Rustins Danish Oil they will mature and darken over time and bring out the iridescent sheen of this beautiful wood. Prices start at £55 for a 310mm drawer insert.
Black American Walnut Cutlery Drawers
Black American Walnut is one of our darkest and most lavish materials, with an unmistakable grain that makes for gorgeous black walnut worktops, as well as incredible solid wood cutlery drawer inserts.
It’s a very hard-wearing timber that will easily put up with the wear and tear that any cutlery drawer insert will undergo and look stunning for years to come. All we suggest, in order to keep it well maintained, would be to apply a coating of Rustins Danish Oil once a year. Prices start at £65 for a 310mm insert.
At Worktop Express® we go through great lengths to create high quality timber products at unbeatable prices, and we think cutlery drawer inserts are the perfect matching accessory for our attractive timber worktops.
