  1. Hi, what would you recommend to seal the wood upstand to the worktop once fitted

    Thank Marc

  2. Hi Marc,

We recommend using a silicone adhesive to attach the upstands directly to the wall rather than the worktop itself, though you can use a small bead of clear silicone sealant to fill the gap between the worktop and the upstand, if you so wish.

    Kind regards,

  3. I am about to fit a new kitchen worktop and upstand, do I tile the wall down below the worktop level to the top of the base units fit worktop then upstanding. or do I just fit the worktop then the upstanding and then tile the wall from the top of the upstanding. Regards George

  4. Hello George,

We would recommend that you fit the worktop first, then the upstand, and then your tiles. The upstand will need to be fitted directly to the wall, and ensuring this is in place first will mean your first row of tiles meets the top of your upstand, for a neat finish.

    Kind regards,

    Stephanie @ Worktop Express.

  5. Hi, we’ve had one of your walnut worktops fitted which looks great! It has small hexagon tiles on the wall above, but this has left a grout edge against the worktop that doesn’t look great.
What would you recommend for fixing a matching walnut upstand to the tiled wall?
    Thanks, Peter

  6. Hello Peter,

Upstands can be fixed to the tiles but this may not provide the most attractive finish – we would recommend attaching upstands directly to the wall if possible.

We would usually advise fixing directly to the wall with a grab adhesive, but the effectiveness of these may be affected by the tile surface, so we recommend testing first if you do decide to fix the upstand directly to your tiles.

    Kind regards,

    Stephanie @ Worktop Express.

  7. Hello,

We have exposed brickwork walls so not a perfectly even surface. What would be the best way to attach the upstands in our case?

  8. Hello Megan,

Upstands are a fantastic way to conceal uneven walls, and they can be fitted using the instructions outlined above. Where the wall is uneven, you may wish to use a little extra silicone to ensure a secure fit.

    Kind regards,

  9. Do you apply the silicone along the length of the upstand, or in blobs?

  10. I am just about to fit oak upstand, do I mitre the internal corners or do I just butt the upstands to each other.

  11. Hello Gary,

Thank you for your message. We recommend applying the silicone across the length of the upstand and attach it directly to the wall as this gives a secure fitting.

    Kind regards,
    Ellie @ Worktop Express

  12. Hello Carol,

Thank you for your message. It is a personal choice to mitre your upstand or not as it is purely atheistical and doesn’t change the functionality of the accessory.

  13. As advised above I will use silicone adhesive however I assume the upstand must be oiled several times as per the work top. Should the back of the upstand be oiled and if so will this affect the adhesion to the wall, please?

  14. Hello David,

Thank you for your message. If you have chosen our pre-oiling service for your wooden surfaces then you will only need to apply one coat of oil after installation, therefore you will not need to re-oil the back of the upstand. However, if you haven’t chosen this service your wooden surfaces will need at least three coats of oil before installation to achieve the best finish. The oil we use and recommend on our wooden surfaces will not affect the performance of the silicone when you fit the upstand to the wall.

  15. Hello just to clear u a bit of confusion, my worktop is the laminated type so when I got my also laminated upstanding do I silicone the bottom of the upstanding and the back of the upstanding which will be adhered to ceramic tiles.

  16. Hello Graham,

Thank you for contacting us regarding the installation of your upstand. To install any of our upstands we recommend putting a water-resistant silicone along the back of the upstand only and attaching this directly to the wall for a secure fitting.

If you would like more information on how to fit a laminate upstand, please follow our specialist guide for assistance:
