What Height Should a Kitchen Worktop be?

The standard height of a kitchen worktop in the UK is 900mm. This measurement is the total height of the cabinet lets, cabinet, and the thickness of the worktop. At Worktop Express, we recommend adjusting the height of your cabinet legs to allow for the height of your cabinet and thickness of your worktop to reach a total height of roughly 900mm.

Why are worktops usually 900mm high?

Worktops can still be found at various heights in older buildings, but 900mm gives an optimum height for working without straining back or arm muscles. Working at a lower height can be uncomfortable, which is why washing up in a sink for long periods can hurt!

Taller or shorter kitchen users, or kitchen users who use wheelchairs, may want to make adjustments based on what is most comfortable for them.

How to measure kitchen worktop height

The height of a kitchen worktop is the combined height of the cabinets and the thickness of the worktop, so you’ll need to measure from the floor to the top of the worktop.

What height should a plug socket be above worktops?

Kitchen sockets should be 15cm above your kitchen worktop, according to regulations. This allows for clear space from any water spillages to your worktop while also ensuring any sparks are significantly away from any flammable substances on your worktop.
