Our full stave ash worktops on display on the Good Homes Magazine stand at the Ideal Home Show 2017.

If you are visiting the Ideal Home Show at Olympia London before April 9th, you may notice a fantastic solid wood kitchen set that we constructed in conjunction with Good Homes magazine.

The kitchen features two runs of cabinets and an island, all covered with our full stave ash worktops, which provide a bright contrast to the charcoal grey in-frame cabinets.

This entire kitchen set was styled in conjunction with interior stylist Kate McPhee for Good Homes, with the aim of showcasing the best interior products that are currently on the market.

We asked Kate what made her choose full stave ash worktops from our expansive collection of hardwood timbers, to which she replied:

“It was really important to choose a timber with prominent grain so that people could enjoy the natural texture of the wood.

“Our aim was to reinvent the traditional kitchen look by combining a very traditional in-frame timber kitchen with a light hardwood that brings texture and warmth to the scheme.”

The worktops we provided for the Good Homes stand were pre-cut by our bespoke cutting service to match the designer’s precise specifications, and were delivered by our 2Man team so that they could be installed immediately with minimal fuss.

Thanks to the carefully planning of our fabrication department, the installation proceeded without a hitch; indeed, Kate commented that “the installation was an absolute breeze and very straightforward.”

If you are looking for inspiration for your new kitchen, there’s still plenty of time to visit the Ideal Home Show at Olympia, which can be accessed from Kensington Olympia station (or is less than 15 minutes on foot from Hammersmith station).

One of the kitchen sets planned for our Birmingham worktop showroom

You can visit Worktop Express® at a variety of worktop showrooms across England, and soon we will be opening our latest location right in the heart of the West Midlands.

Our Birmingham worktop showroom is currently under construction and will include nine fantastic kitchen sets, each of which will feature one of our most popular wood worktops or laminate worktops.

The team is currently on site and planning the new showroom, which will also be home to our new central distribution depot, allowing us to deliver a wide range of kitchen worktops to customers in and around Birmingham at an even faster rate.

The walls are going up at our Birmingham worktop showroom. Check out our social media to be the first to know when it opens!

We are hoping to open the showroom in mid to late April, but thought we’d give everyone looking for worktops in Birmingham a little heads-up!

To be the first to know when the new showroom is open to the general public, keep an eye on our Facebook and Twitter pages – we’ll be sure to keep our followers updated on everything showroom-related.

Our wooden worktops are made from the finest hardwood timber in our European facility and are provided without any treatment as standard.

Though a range of different treatments are available for wood worktops, we suggest using a kitchen worktop oil; our suggested oil is easy to apply, and will give a beautiful low-lustre finish that is also food safe.

At Worktop Express® we recommend using Rustins Danish Oil, or our own Danish Oil for Worktops which is available in 1L, 2.5L and 5L capacities.

A wood worktop needs three coats of kitchen worktop oil on the top surface and 6 coats on the sides to ensure it is fully sealed. To coat your worktop, you will need to order approximately 1L of oil for every 3M of worktop.

After you have performed the initial oiling, you will need to treat your worktop regularly for the first six weeks to build up a protective layer. We would recommend that you re-oil the worktop once every three months after this point.

For a comprehensive guide to oiling your worktops, please check out our ‘Oiling Worktops Nutshell Guide.’

At Worktop Express, we have made a commitment to sourcing the timbers we use for our wooden work surfaces responsibly. We go to great lengths to ensure we are using sustainable wood, and that includes supporting the International Tree Foundation (ITF) in their work within the UK and in Africa.

75-year-old Pa Emmanuel of the Dom community taking care of his prunus seedlings

In July last year, we wrote about the work that ITF were planning on undertaking in Cameroon with their Community Assistance in Development (COMAID) project. The aim of the project is to establish a ‘Food Forest’ to provide nutrition and income for the local residents of the Dom community. The forest exists within the buffer zone of a 472 hectare Dom community forest in the Bamenda Highlands in North West Cameroon, and contains 354 different plant species: 23 of which are currently threatened, 12 which are new to science, and 5 which are endemic to the forest.

In the initial phase of the project, ITF supported the planting of 19,842 trees, and have reported subsequently that close to 18,000 of these still survive. Monitors, who have been equipped with boots and cutlasses by COMAID, regularly patrol the forest to prevent illegal activities and clear fire breaks around the newly planted areas. So far, fire outbreaks in the Dom forest have been prevented.

The Dom community forest management institution

The second phase will oversee the planting of 15,000 more trees along the remaining buffer whilst continuing to protect the trees that have already been planted. Hands-on training will be provided for 50 community tree planters and training for early forest-based conflict crisis warning signals and resolution will be given. ITF will also work to reorganise the Dom Dialogue Platform within the Dom Community Forest Management Institution to ensure it is more gender sensitive. This phase of COMAID will culminate in July 2017, and we will provide you an update when the project has been completed.

At Worktop Express we now offer an enviable selection of laminate kitchen worktops including many stone, wood and quartz-effect surfaces. With such a large selection of colours, finishes and edge profiles, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to pick a favourite. This month we have chosen a wood-effect laminate as our ‘Worktop of the Month’: Coco Bolo.

This attractive laminate surface is reminiscent of a lighter version of our solid wood zebrano worktops, and has an extra matt textured finish that makes it feel more realistic than some other wood-effect laminate worktops.

Coco Bolo laminate kitchen worktops are textured to recreate the feel of real timber

Like the other laminate kitchen worktops in our collection, these Coco Bolo worktops are made in the UK and have received the FIRA Gold Award for product excellence. This mark of quality recognises that these surfaces have been independently evaluated and tested by furniture industry experts.

Our laminate worktops are made using sustainable composite fibreboard, which is then wrapped in a decorative sheet and a clear laminate overlay. These layers are bonded together to create an extremely hardwearing surface that is also highly resistant to water and stains.

These affordable laminate worktops are a great fit for a variety of contemporary kitchen settings, but if you can’t decide whether they might be the right choice for your new kitchen, why not order our laminate worktop sample pack? This pack includes each of the laminate surfaces in our collection and is priced at just £5 with fast courier delivery. Furthermore, if you go on to purchase any of our worktops, we will happily refund the sample pack cost.

Following the launch of our new range of laminate worktops, we wanted to remind you that – alongside these superb new decors – there are many other 4 metre worktops in our collection.

Whether you are looking to create an extra-large kitchen countertop, breakfast bar or a desk for the home or office, these 4.1 metre laminate worktops create a vast, seamless surface that is both hardwearing and incredibly affordable.

There are many other 4 metre worktops in our collection, including our entire range of solid wood worktops. Whichever style of kitchen you possess – big or small, contemporary or traditional – Worktop Express has a surface to suit your needs.

If you’d like to take a closer look at any of the worktops in our collection, simply head to your local worktops showroom, or order one of our worktop samples.

Every month a huge number of custom kitchen worktops pass through the hands of our incredibly skilled fabrication team. In February alone, over 750 bespoke wood and laminate worktops were created, and March is set to be even busier! Here on the blog we have chosen to highlight three of the most excellent custom kitchen worktops that we’ve seen this month.

Prime Beech

This extra-large Prime Beech worktop was created to accommodate a particularly spacious breakfast bar area.

Our Prime Beech worktops are made from staves that are chosen for their uniform colour and lack of natural imperfections. The result is a worktop that is light in colour and enduringly popular in both traditional and modern kitchen designs.

This bespoke Prime Beech worktop was created by biscuit jointing two worktops together. Our team then made a number of irregular cut-outs and an aperture to accommodate a Belfast sink. Two sets of drainage grooves were routed into the surface on either side of the sink to allow for natural water drainage. Once fabricated, the worktop was given a number of coats of oil to protect it prior to installation.

If you think Prime Beech worktops would be an ideal centrepiece in your kitchen, they start at £85 for a 2M x 620mm x 40mm worktop.

End Grain Butchers Block

This large maple and walnut endgrain butchers block measures 1M across and was pre-oiled for the customer.

Hundreds of kitchen worktops pass through our facility each month, but we’re always on the lookout for something really unusual. This extra-large endgrain butchers block worktop certainly caught our eye; measuring 1M in diameter, this beautiful piece was constructed from a mix of maple and walnut staves that had been assembled with their hard-wearing endgrain exposed.

The butcher block had a small pencil edge profile applied to the top edge and was pre-oiled to protect it during delivery (a treatment that also facilitates swift installation once on site).

Our endgrain butchers blocks come in oak, maple, walnut or maple and walnut timbers with prices starting at just £210 for a 620mm diameter x 100mm circular oak butchers block.

Iroko

This custom iroko kitchen worktop features an undermounted sink cut-out and a variety of other customisations.

Our iroko worktops are made using resilient hardwood timber from central Africa. Although each piece starts off as a vibrant golden yellow timber, the wood matures quickly into a deep bronze hue.

This iroko surface was enhanced with an undermounted sink cut-out, a tap hole, and hotrod grooves. Worktop connector bolt recesses were routed into the underside to allow it to be attached to another piece of iroko, thus creating an L-shaped work surface. As with all the other worktops that pass through our facility, several coats of oil were applied to protect it during delivery and installation.

If you like the idea of having this exotic timber in your kitchen, our iroko worktops are available from just £125 for a 2M x 620mm x 40mm surface.
