Solid Wood Shelves: Now on Sale! block wood work tops

Worktop Express® has been a leading retailer of block wood work tops since 2009, and have so far delivered well in excess of 150,000 orders, whilst keeping over 5,000 worktops in stock at any one time.

But we won’t stop there! Indeed, we have continued to introduce new types of worktops and other unique products such as our wooden tablet holders, and we’re now proud to say that there’s now another timber treat in stock: it’s our aim to give you as much choice as possible!

Today we’d like to introduce solid wood floating shelves to you, which have recently been launched on our website. These items are made from the same terrific quality oak that we use for our worktops, but fabricated into ideal sizes for wooden shelving. The shelves are drilled to accommodate easy-to-fit floating shelf brackets that mean the overall look won’t be spoilt by visible supports.

Initially we are offering oak shelves in a range of sizes, from 300mm up to 1500mm, in a depth of 220mm, with a thickness of 40mm (just like our worktops). All our shelves come with a square edge profile that’s sanded to a very smooth finish, and then completed with 3 coats of Danish oil.

We are also happy to offer bespoke shelves, in longer lengths, wider, of a different thickness and in a variety of different timbers. Just contact us to talk to one of our fabrication experts who will be able to talk you through the available options and provide a quote.

Starting at just £22.50 for a 300mm shelf, our shelves are not only superbly built from the finest wood, but are also great value, too!

We hope to soon be offering shelves constructed from different timbers in the near future, so keep an eye on the blog for more info.

Wacky Wood Uses: Print Directly on to Wood with an Inkjet Printer

It requires a huge amount of skill to engrave solid wood, and the members of our fabrication team will tell you just how much work is required to master routers and CNC machines.

If you’d like to customise your own piece of wood, there are easier ways: you can use technology you’re likely to already have at home, plus a little bit of ingenuity, and voila!

Steve Ramsey, who writes a blog called ‘Woodworking for Mere Mortals’ has found a clever and relatively simple way of transferring photos, logos or anything else you can print on a home inkjet printer, directly on to wood.

Do give it a go yourself! You’ll need a computer and inkjet printer, some basic photo manipulation software (to reverse the image), a sheet of sticky label paper, a piece of wood (preferably of a lighter colour) and some clear spray lacquer.

First remove the labels from the paper to reveal the shiny plastic layer underneath – this is the side you’ll be printing on. Choose the image or logo you’d like to use and size it appropriately to fit on to a sheet of A4 paper. Remember that you might want to flip the image as when you transfer it, the image will appear in reverse.

Ramsay suggests using an image with bright, bold colours, and not something with too much white in the image – as printers don’t ‘print’ in white ink, areas of the image that should be white will come out the same colour as the wood you’re transferring to.

Once you’ve printed the image, lay it on top the piece of wood you’ve chosen and firmly press down in a careful and even fashion to transfer the image onto the wood. The image should dry almost straight away, though Ramsay recommends using clear lacquer to properly protect it.

Now, we wouldn’t suggest using this method to transfer an image on to one of our exquisite kitchen worktops – the beauty of the wood needs no extra decoration! However, if you’ve had bespoke alterations made to your worktop, you could have some great fun with one of the offcuts. Alternatively, why not order one of our solid wood chopping boards and apply your own company logo or favourite phrase? Be sure to share a picture of the results with us on Facebook, Twitter or Google Plus, or alternatively why not email us?

It’s truly the summer of all sports this year, what with World Cups, Wimbledon and world-class cricket from England against Sri Lanka over the weekend. It’s only appropriate, then, that we keep you in the loop by documenting the recent sporting successes of Frocester Cricket Club, who’s first team are sponsored by Worktop Express® and our solid wood worktops.

For the first time ever, all five of the Frocester league teams were triumphant last weekend, with a sixth victory from the 1st XI in a spectacular win over the Bristolian Downend Cricket Club in the County Cup on the Sunday.

Saturday saw Captain Nick Trainor take his men to victory over Ashcott by 9 wickets, with the Frocester men reducing the visitors to 16-5 very quickly, and eventually dismissing them for 107 in 29 overs.

After Corsham defeated Bath, Frocester took their place back at the top of the West England Premier 1 table, whilst the 2nd XI maintain their position at the top of Premier 1’s 2nd XI table with a convincing 132 run victory over their Swindon rivals.

The 3rd XI defeated Slaughters by 8 wickets at St. Peters, dismissing the visitors for 150 runs and running to victory in the 29th over. The 4th XI beat local rivals Hardwicke by 75 runs, whilst being bowled out for 129, but were dismissed for only 54.

The best finish, however, came from Frocester’s 5th XI who defeated Whitminster’s 2nd XI by 5 runs, with the star of the show being 12 year old Adam Hopkins: this talented young player took 3 wickets in 1 over to take Frocester to an unlikely victory.

Sunday’s entertainment came in the form a County Cup match against Downend. The home team went in to battle first, and were initially put in trouble by the visitors, but a century partnership from Tom Wand and Lewis Gegg followed by a superb 52 runs from Fin Dixon enabled Frocester to post an imposing total of 248-8. After some other convincing performances from the team, and some outstanding fielding under pressure from the Frocester lads, they managed to keep Downend at bay by a 19 run margin.

A fantastic result for all the Frocester teams: and a resounding cheer of ‘congratulations’ from everyone here at Worktop Express® HQ! If you’re interested in finding out more about the people and teams we sponsor, please have a look at our sponsorship page – and do contact us if you’d like any more information.

Have you been pondering one of our divine solid work surfaces, but fear that your kitchen’s layout requires tricky bespoke alterations to cater for a new worktop? Now’s the perfect time to buy a worktop with any number of bespoke alterations, thanks to our ‘Fabrication Fever’ sale, offering 25% off all fabrication services. As regular readers to our blog will know, we are always looking for new and innovative ways introduce solid wood products into your lives, whilst also reducing the wastage here at Worktop Express® HQ.

After investigating the market and realising that many products currently on offer are very poor in terms of quality, we realised that we have just the right tools to create exceptional tablet holders, in exquisitely-crafted solid timber – starting from the fantastic price of just £20.

Made from stunning solid wood worktop offcuts and machined right here in Gloucester on our CNC machine, these tablet stands have been designed with a groove that fits a wide range of tablets up to 11mm thick. Moreover – unlike most other iPad holders that are available – these stands can accommodate the full width of an iPad, making them all the more secure (and more attractive, too).

Our stands are currently available in oak, wenge or zebrano – three of our most popular timbers -and are finished with Danish oil to ensure that the surface remains in premium condition and is easy-to-clean.

If you’ve got an iPad and are wondering why you’d ever need a stand for it, here are some nifty tips on situations in which it could come in handy:

  • Watch the World Cup in bed hands-free.
  • Use it as a second ‘social screen’ on your work desk.
  • Have one for the lounge and use your iPad as a digital picture fame.
  • Use it in the kitchen to hold your iPad like a digital recipe book.
  • Use it at home for hands-free family Skype or Facetime conversations.

If you like the idea of a solid wood tablet stand to complement your kitchen’s beautiful solid wood kitchen countertops, then you’ll want to head over to our Worktop Express® Twitter page, where we’re giving away one of these solid wood iPad stands every day this week – all you’ve got to do is follow us and retweet the daily #WorldCupWood tweet to be in with a chance to win. Don’t miss it!

We love finding bits and bobs to complement our hardwood countertops, so here’s our monthly round up. This week we’re looking at wooden gadgets that are lovely accompaniments for any kitchen.

Fresh at number 5: Meze 11 Deco

Fresh at number 5: Meze 11 Deco

Nearly everyone’s got a smartphone or mp3 player these days, and whilst they tend to come with awful cheap headphones, there are a huge range of alternatives on the market.

Amongst our favourites is the Meze 11 Deco earphone set, which feature a handcrafted beech enclosure that not only looks awesome, but enhances the tone of your tunes pretty nicely too. They’re only £59.95.

In at number 4: OOOMS Wooden USB Stick

Fresh at number 5: Meze 11 Deco

If your desk is anything like ours, you’ll have at least one memory stick hanging around – though wouldn’t you rather have a bespoke solid wood memory stick instead?

Using dead branches that are recycled straight from the forest floor, these USB sticks are far more environmentally sound than the housing on other plastic or metal memory sticks. Better still, the company behind these USBs offers a variety of wood types and can even do unique engravings. 8GB and 16GB variants are available, starting at £19.71.

And at number 3: Orée Board 2 Wireless Keyboard

And at number 3: Orée Board 2 Wireless Keyboard

Keyboards can be pretty boring, plastic affairs that harbour germs, crumbs and annoy your office colleagues with clickety-clackety keys. These solid wood keyboards from Orée are something else. They are made by hand from solid wood (maple, walnut or a special edition cherry), can be personally engraved and have a range of key fonts to choose from. The keyboards are wireless and use Bluetooth technology, so they are compatible with a whole range of computers and tablets. Get one now for £121.

Our number 2: SpeakaBoo Bamboo iPhone Speaker

Our number 2: SpeakaBoo Bamboo iPhone Speaker

There are a huge range of iPhone and iPod docks on the market, and whilst most need batteries or mains power to run, the SpeakaBoo works entirely by using the sound resonating properties of bamboo.

There are three different variants, and they’re all natural, very eco-friendly and are hand-made by a charity that employs disadvantaged workers in the UK (Dorset, to be exact). They start at only £23.99 and come with their own little protective carry bag.

And this week’s number 1: KitSound Soul Walnut Speaker

And this week’s number 1: KitSound Soul Walnut Speaker

The SpeakaBoo is all well and good for amplifying an iPhone’s speakers, but if you’re after some proper electronic amplification of your tunes, do take a look at the KitSound Soul Bluetooth speaker. It will work with any smartphone or tablet (that has Bluetooth audio streaming), but also has a 3.5mm audio input for listening to older devices. With up to 10 hours of play time thanks to the built-in 1000mAh battery, it’s portable, too.

With the beauty of solid wood also comes exclusivity, as no two KitSound Soul speakers are quite the same, thanks to the natural variation of walnut’s beautiful grain (just like our delightful solid walnut worktops). Originally retailing for £139, it now can be purchased for a snip at only £69.

Our marvellous maple solid wood counters have always been a popular number. There’s something about this light coloured timber that makes it highly desirable for traditional and contemporary kitchens alike.

June’s Worktop of the Month is full stave maple – a surface that shows this timber off in its most brilliant form. The ‘full stave’ construction means that, unlike the standard worktop which has smaller 40mm wide staves, this high quality worktop has staves averaging 90mm in width (with some up to 120mm!) that run the full length of the worktop. There’s definitely no better way to show off the stunning natural figuring and intricate grain of maple.

Maple has some fantastic qualities that make it perfect for a worktop, such as being hard-wearing and incredibly smooth. Most obviously though, it’s a very light timber, which helps to reflect light upwards, making the kitchen a brighter space to be in.

Maple is found throughout the world – and largely in the northern hemisphere. It is most common in Europe and of course America, where it’s widely grown not for its timber, but for the sweet syrup that can be manufactured from the tree’s sap. It has also been widely used for construction, as well as producing a variety of instruments and even baseball bats.

It starts at £275 for a 2M worktop – a bargain for some large swathes of high quality maple. There is certainly plenty to love about this terrific timber, and not just for the kitchen: in its full stave form it can create a fantastic kitchen centrepiece, dining table or office desk. If you’ve not seen it up close, then why not order one of our samples? They’re a bargain at only £5 including delivery, and as if that wasn’t cheap enough, we’ll also refund the cost off your first order.

Don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions!
