I’ve seen you mention ‘staves’ a lot on your website, what exactly are they? Question of the Week 13.09.14
‘I’ve seen you mention ‘staves’ a lot on your website, what exactly are they?’
This week’s ‘Question of the Week’ comes from Joanna in Tewkesbury, who has seen the word ‘stave’ used regularly on our site but isn’t entirely sure what it refers to.
“I’m considering buying one of your wooden worktops but want to get a clearer understanding of the word ‘staves’. I’ve seen them mentioned a lot on your website, but what exactly are they?”
Good question – it’s one that we get asked a lot! We’re more than happy to clear up the confusion.
Staves are the individual wooden blocks that are used to construct a wooden worktop. Worktops are often constructed using individual staves as it is both better value than a single large piece of timber, and also is more structurally sound as it avoids warping. The smaller blocks make a worktop more hard-wearing and also add unique character to the surface thanks to a variety of wood grain and colours.
Our ‘standard’ worktops are constructed using staves measuring 40 x 40mm that are anywhere from 300 to 600mm in length. These staves are finger jointed with the addition of high-pressure glues. A finger joint involves a set of teeth and recesses being cut into corresponding staves that lock together like the interlocking fingers of clasped hands – hence the name.
‘Deluxe’ worktops (a worktop formulation that is exclusive to Worktop Express®) are constructed in exactly the same way, but instead use more opulent staves of up to 90mm in width. These larger staves give the worktop a more impressive appearance due to their width, which allows a greater showcase of the wood’s figuring and other distinctive properties.
Lastly, our most luxurious surfaces are known as ‘full stave’ worktops. These – as the name suggests – are constructed using a smaller number of staves that run the full length of the worktop. At 90mm wide, the staves are the same width as our Deluxe worktops, but the unbroken swathes of timber are a centrepiece that would look stunning in any kitchen.
Prime variants of our worktops are constructed in exactly the same way as our other worktops, but consist of staves that have been specially chosen to create a worktop that has more consistent colour and fewer natural imperfections.
If you’d like to find out more about the construction of our staves, with plenty of photographs of help further your understanding, then do read our ‘Construction Types Explained’ information guide.
Alternatively, feel free to order one of our worktop samples to see the construction of our worktops up close. They’re just £5 including delivery and are available in any of our worktop varieties, including Prime, Deluxe and full stave.
All the best,
Ben @ Worktop Express
