All About Solid Restaurant Table Tops: A Nutshell Guide
Which Shape Suits Best?
Available in a rectangular (995mm x 620mm), square (620mm²) and circular (620mm diameter) constructions, our solid oak table tops are an ideal surface for restaurants, bars, cafes and all sorts of home uses, too.
Café owner? Try our circular table tops – the natural material and beautiful wood grain looks fantastic alongside organic beverages and sweet treats.
Running a restaurant? Rectangular table tops are ideal for giving diners more space than a standard square table, and the solid oak timber exudes luxury and quality.
Proud to be a pub or bar landlord? Consider our square table tops both for booths and standing-only areas of the bar – if lacquered, they will even look fabulous outside during the spring and summer months.
If you are looking for something a little more unusual, our skilled fabrication team can create almost any kind of bespoke size and shape: we deliver impeccable results on a quick lead-time.
Choose From 40mm or 20mm Stave Construction
All three of our oak table tops are 40mm thick as standard, and are available in either 20mm or 40mm wide stave construction. The staves are the individual blocks of wood that make up each surface, which is then cut to size to create a number of table tops.
The 20mm stave table tops are fantastic value for money and have a unique aesthetic which looks outstanding in a range of environments. Alternatively, the wider 40mm staves provide ample room to show off the oak timber’s beautiful grain pattern and colouration.
Which option you choose largely comes down to personal preference, and that is why we don’t limit the options available. If you don’t fancy solid oak table tops, why not commission us to create table tops from a Deluxe or full stave worktop construction? Our range includes all sorts of beautiful timbers that would be ideal for creating a restaurant, bar or café table top.
Finishing your Table Tops
As standard, our restaurant table tops are provided in a sanded, but otherwise untreated state. We recommend using Rustins Danish Oil – a hard-wearing finishing oil that is food safe, makes the timber water-resistant and also brings out the colour of the natural wood beautifully.
Alternatively, your table tops could be lacquered to give them an exceptionally resilient clear coating that creates a shinier finish than Danish oil, and is very easy to keep clean in high-traffic environments.
Whatever finish you prefer, we can provide a bespoke fabrication service to pre-oil or laminate the worktops for you prior to delivery. If this appeals, please do get in touch with our fabrication team to discuss the options.
Attaching Table Tops to a Base
Our solid oak table tops are not provided with a base, allowing you to attach them to a stand which fits perfectly in with your business or home environment.
Once you have chosen your base of choice, however, fastening it to a wooden worktop is incredibly simple. Most normal stands will have four or more holes to attach to the underside of the table top, and thanks to wood’s innate workable quality, this means a stand can be easily attached using screws.
There are a wide variety of suitable stands available, but due to the weight of solid wood timber, we recommend a strong metallic base to ensure it remains stable.
Maintaining Table Tops
Once your table tops are installed, maintenance should be carried out regularly, but it is very easy to do. If you have decided to choose oil as your table top’s treatment, this will need to be re-applied regularly in the first 6 weeks after installation, and then approximately every 3 – 6 months afterwards – depending on wear. If you have decided upon a lacquered finish, this will rarely need to be re-applied (apart from in extreme high-wear circumstances), but must be kept clear of dust, food debris and other detritus in order to keep it in the best condition. We recommend using warm soapy water with a small amount of white vinegar and / or lemon juice to help remove tough stains.
If your solid wood table tops happen to have any more ingrained stains, one of the beautiful things about wood is that it can be sanded and re-finished very easily. We sell a Rustins Worktop Maintenance Kit that is also ideal for maintaining oiled table tops.
We hope you have found all the information required in this guide, but remember that we also offer a sample service that covers every single one of our wood species, should you wish to see a sample of our solid wood surfaces up-close before making a purchase.
