Creating a Small Kitchen Breakfast Bar for Compact Spaces
If you are redesigning a kitchen that is not large enough for an open-plan dining area, consider a small breakfast bar to provide an alternative space to eat, work and relax.
Breakfast bar worktops are often created as an addition to one side of a kitchen island, but can also be made as a stand-alone small work surface attached to a kitchen wall or as an extension to worktops on the open side of a run of cabinets.
Choosing a Small Kitchen Breakfast Bar
A breakfast bar doesn’t have to be big, in fact they can be as slim as 300mm and make the most of wall space in your kitchen that might otherwise be redundant.
A small kitchen breakfast bar could be made from wood, laminate or even Earthstone worktops, cut to size to suit your kitchen layout. Wood worktops are the easiest option to customise, in order to fit perfectly into an available gap, and we offer a wide range of wood types to suit any kitchen – whether modern or classic in style.
Alternatively, laminate bathroom worktops are the perfect choice for repurposing as a small kitchen breakfast bar. Our bathroom laminate worktops come in a variety of popular décors and measure 365mm wide as standard – an ideal size for small kitchens. They can be easily cut-to-size if needed, and are manufactured using a moisture-resistant core that makes them an ideal choice for kitchens, as well as bathrooms.
Supporting Kitchen Breakfast Bars
A standalone kitchen breakfast bar will require supporting legs as well as brackets to attach it to the adjacent wall or cabinets. We sell a range of breakfast bar legs that are adjustable – depending on the height of your breakfast bar – and can be easily fitted to the underside of any of our worktops.
Alternatively, a small kitchen breakfast bar can be supported by a vertical section of matching worktop, attached to the worktop and floor using suitably-sized ‘L’ brackets.
We recommend that one breakfast bar leg is used for each metre of unsupported worktop; this is to make sure that the weight of the surface is evenly distributed and does not put strain on the rest of the surface.
Custom Kitchen Breakfast Bars
If you require a custom breakfast bar to fit into a specific part of your kitchen, consider taking advantage of our bespoke kitchen worktops service. We can customise both our wood and laminate worktops by cutting them to size, applying edge profiles (in the case of wood), or cutting apertures to accommodate sinks and hobs.
Custom wood breakfast bars can be designed, priced and ordered online using our Online Bespoke Worktop Tool; you can see some of the examples of worktops we have created by visiting our Bespoke Worktop Fabrication Gallery.
