What is the recommended overhang for wooden work surfaces when fitting a Belfast sink?

Question

“I would like to order some customised wooden work surfaces with a Belfast sink cut out. I have already purchased my kitchen sink from your website, but took a bit of extra time to decide on the type of timber I wanted. I’d like to allow for a small section of worktop to ‘overhang’ so that water cannot spill over at the sides and back. What measurement of overhang would you recommend?”

Answer

You are right to consider the benefits that a worktop overhang can offer, as – indeed – any overflowing water could cause significant damage if left to sit on the worktop beneath your Belfast sink for an extended period of time.

We recommend an overhang of between 7 and 10mm. This will allow the overhang to cover part (or all) of the rim of the sink, on both sides and the back edge. Once the sink is in place and connected to the plumbing, a silicone sealant can be applied to the sink’s rim before the worktop is placed on top and left to dry.

Have you considered drainage grooves for your wooden worktop? This is a popular choice to complement Belfast sinks and makes a practical and stylish feature for any work surface. Drainage grooves are available in straight, ‘fan’ and ‘fountain’ designs.
