All About Overmounted Sinks for Solid Wood Worktops: A Worktop Express® Nutshell Guide

We stock a wide range of kitchen sinks in the overmounted style. Designed to nestle perfectly within a cut-out in solid wood worktops, these sinks usually come with a lip or rim to help hold the sink in position and create a ‘finished’ look.

This type of sink is incredibly popular, especially with keen ‘DIYers’, as the simple design makes the sink unit easy to install. Our overmounted kitchen sinks are available in a variety of styles, so that you can find the one that is best suited to your kitchen.

Stainless Steel Sink

Materials

Also known as ‘inset’, ‘top mount’ or 'drop-in' sinks, our overmounted sinks are available in high-grade stainless steel or fireclay ceramic. Stainless steel tends to be favoured by owners of contemporary kitchens, whilst glossy ceramic sinks are often preferred by those with a more traditional property.

In our very own collection of WEX sinks, we supply a number of fantastic-value options made from high-quality 304 grade stainless steel. 304 is the most popular grade for stainless steel used for food preparation and dining and – because of its composition – is more resistant to corrosion than other grades.

Our ceramic overmounted sinks are made with quality fireclay, and are glazed to produce a smooth, high-gloss finish. Fired at extremely high temperatures, our ceramic sinks are very hard-wearing and resistant to scratches and stains, as well as being heat resistant. Each ceramic kitchen sink is individually made using natural materials; therefore, a tolerance of +/-5mm must be expected.

Design

Overmounted sinks come in two designs: a 1.0 (single) bowl and a 1.5 bowl.

A single-bowl overmounted sink sits alongside an ample in-built draining board, providing handy additional space for drainage. Equally useful is the 1.5 bowl design, which incorporates a large, primary bowl coupled with a smaller ‘half’ bowl. This additional bowl is perfect for washing hands or preparing fresh produce when the main bowl is full. Customers can opt for the design that is best suited to the needs of their household.

Configuration

Kitchen sinks come with different configurations for taps and drainers, in order to accommodate a range of room layouts and to cater for the preferences of left and right-handed individuals.

Therefore, some styles of sink come with a left-hand draining board, whilst for others it is located on the right-hand-side. For these two options, there is usually a tap hole cut-out on the underside of the sink, which can be knocked out if you wish to add a sink-mounted tap. Alternatively, kitchen taps with sufficient reach can be mounted onto the worktop instead.

We also supply a range of sinks with a reversible configuration. These sinks will have two tap hole cut-outs, so you can opt for whichever orientation you prefer.

Our efficient worktop customisation service affords the opportunity to have your worktop provided with an overmounted sink cut-out prior to delivery. This convenient service means you can combine your sink and worktop order and have all items delivered together. Cut-outs are based upon the precise dimensions of the sink unit, and are cut with the utmost precision in our own Gloucestershire-based workshop. Once tailored to your specific requirements, wood worktops will be pre-oiled before dispatch, to enrich the wood and protect freshly-cut edges from changes in their surrounding environment. We strongly recommend lining the edge of overmounted sinks with a clear silicone sealant to prevent any water ingress.
