January’s Top Ten: Top Ten Tips for Wooden Worktops
We’re all about wood here at Worktop Express®- no surprises there, then! Here are our top ten worktop tips, including things you might want to consider when making your choice, and how to enjoy your worktops after they have been installed:
1) The company
Worktop Express® are the UK’s finest online wooden worktop suppliers: our prices are extremely competitively priced with no compromise on quality. Our strong environmental policy means that when investing in our company you can feel reassured that you are purchasing responsibly. The majority of our European worktops – including oak – are manufactured from timbers that have been FSC-certified, and we ensure that all non-European timbers are sourced sustainably, too. We also run sales and promotions regularly, offering our customers even better value for money.
2) The timber
We hold all worktops in stock in the UK and market the largest range of species in the country – meaning that there is something here for everyone, and you can receive your order without delay. Keep it classic with beech or oak in a traditional style kitchen, or spice it up a little with a more exotic worktop such as iroko or dramatic zebrano – the choice is entirely yours.
3) Finishing your worktop
Your worktops come supplied sanded, square-edged and unfinished, giving you the freedom to cut and oil them as required. Alternatively, you can let our skilled in-house team fabricate your worktops as part of our fully functioning bespoke cutting service, guaranteeing exceptional results every time.
Our delivery system has been designed to make your life easier and incorporates a diverse range of options. Our 2Man delivery team was introduced in 2011 and now delivers nationwide – something we are continually proud of. We also work in partnership with an external courier service to fulfil areas of the country not yet covered by our own in-house service.
Once received, your wood worktops should be laid on a flat surface and separated with battens if they’re being stored for prolonged periods of time. You need to allow sufficient ventilation when storing multiple worktops to prevent damage. We also advise transporting the worktops to the room of installation at least three days prior to fitting, to allow the timber to acclimatise.
Oiling is important to build up a protective layer before installation. Untreated worktops will require three coats to the faces and six to the end-grains, and all items (including pre-oiled worktops) require one additional application after installation (at least). Please visit our Oiling Worktops information guide for further information.
We have a number of products in stock to help protect your worktop, such as: hot rods, which will prevent items from the hob burning marks into the timber; moisture barriers, which prevent excessive moisture from certain appliances affecting your worktop; and drainer grooves, which can stop water sitting on the surface and staining it.
To ensure that your worktops have a long, trouble-free life, they must be fitted correctly. For example, when fixing worktops to the wall or on top of cabinets, please only use a slotted bracket and allow sufficient room for the timber’s natural expansion and contraction. Restricting this movement can cause damage to your worktop.
Always wipe up spilled liquid or food to prevent staining and damage to your timber. If minor stains do become apparent, you can sand down and re-oil; however prompt attention is advised so that staining does not reach this stage. Regular oiling will maintain the worktop’s protective barrier.
10) Enjoy… and take a few photos!
Well, your wonderful worktops have now been installed and have transformed your kitchen; all that’s left to do is so sit back, relax and enjoy! However, if you can’t resist snapping a few pics, we’d love to see them, too.
In fact, from January 10th to February 10th 2014 (inclusive) we’re offering snap-happy customers the chance to win an iPad Air by sharing some pictures of their Worktop Express® worktops on our Facebook page – so if you’re reading this in January or early February, please head over!
However, if you’ve missed the competition, please don’t let that deter you from taking a few photos – it’s always great to hear from satisfied customers and we love seeing our worktops in action!
