How to Install Floating Shelves: Perfect Companions for Our Wood Worktops
Our floating shelves are superb accessories for kitchens featuring our wood worktops. Made from the same beautiful hardwood, they not only complement the countertops, but also offer a fantastic storage solution for your kitchen.
These wooden floating shelves are available in a variety of timbers, and in lengths from 300mm up to 1500mm. If you are looking for shelves of a custom size, we also offer a service for creating bespoke solid wood floating shelves. If you take advantage of this service, our fabrication team can create bespoke shelving up to 2000mm in length in any of the same elegant timbers that are used to create our collection of wooden worktops.
This guide provides some handy information on installing the invisible brackets and mounting your solid wood shelf successfully.
Tools & Equipment Required
- Electronic drill with hammer function/masonry drill
- 10mm masonry drill bit
- Spirit level & pencil
- Tape measure
- Masking tape
- Adjustable spanner or open end 10mm spanner
Mounting the Shelf
Start by attaching masking tape to the wall on which you are planning to mount your new shelf. Ensure the tape used is wide enough to allow you to mark the wall in the right locations.
Next, use a spirit level to mark a straight line (equal to the width of your shelf) on the masking tape using a pencil.
With a tape measure, find the centre points of the bracket holes on the rear of the shelf, and then mark these points on to your previously-drawn line to ensure that the shelf is properly aligned.
Insert a 10mm masonry drill bit into your drill and make sure it is tightened up sufficiently. Wearing appropriate eye-protection, drill a 70mm-deep hole at each point you have marked for the brackets. Make sure the drill is straight and that you apply an even pressure when drilling.
Insert the provided plastic wall plugs into the holes you have drilled and push them into the wall until flush. If the hole is tight you might need to use a small hammer to push them in sufficiently.
Next, attach the included washers onto the screw-end of the shelf brackets, then insert the supports into the wall plugs, using a spanner to tighten them sufficiently.
Using a spirit level, check that the brackets are pointing out straight and perfectly horizontal, so that you can be sure the shelf will sit flat.
You are now ready to push the shelf on to the brackets. Take care, proceed slowly and check once again with the spirit level to ensure that your shelf is level.
Please note that – due to the weight of the items – we recommend installing the shelves directly onto a brick wall, or that you mount them directly onto the studs of a partition wall. During installation, take care to ensure that the shelves are mounted at suitable and safe heights. If you feel there is a possibility that you will be storing moderately heavy items on the shelving, or that these will be placed in areas utilised by children, we recommend purchasing additional battens for extra support.
If you are unsure about any aspect of these installation guidelines, we recommend consulting a kitchen fitter or carpenter, who may be able to mount the shelves for you. If you would like to take a closer look at the quality of our solid wood shelves prior to installation, our worktop samples are made of the same high-quality timbers, and can be ordered with next-day delivery for just £5.
