Can I Rout Hotrod or Drainage Grooves Myself? Question of the Week 22.11.14
‘Can I Rout Hotrod or Drainage Grooves Myself?’Our latest ‘Question of the Week’ comes from Matthew in Hereford, who is ordering kitchen worktops from us and wants to know if they can be easily customised using home DIY tools. QUESTION: “I’m about to order some worktops from you, but wanted some advice as to whether they can be easily customised by the likes of a home DIYer? I’d particularly like to create grooves for hotrods and drainage.”
ANSWER: Hi Matthew, The beauty of wood is that – should you wish – it can be easily worked using fairly basic home DIY powertools. To cut hotrod and drainage grooves, you would need a powertool called a router (not to be confused with the computer hardware!). A quality router will set you back at least £100, and you can then purchase an appropriate worktop router cutter from us for only £10. Jigs are also available at a further cost, which can be very handy for helping you to cut straight lines into the worktop (particularly if this is your first attempt at making this sort of customisation); however, unless you plan on utilising these tools again in future, the cost of a router, router cutter, jig and facial protection might seem too much. Luckily, there is a fantastic value alternative available from our highly-trained fabrication team. We can offer a set of pre-routed drainage grooves in a variety of designs for only £45, and hotrod grooves with a set of stainless steel rods included from only £40. If you decide to have these fabrications completed by our in-house experts, they’ll also coat the worktop in at least two layers of oil before it’s delivered, meaning you could install it straightaway – no hassle! There are many other fabrication options available on our Wortkop Cutting Service page, all of which are very competitively priced. You can also check out all of the fabrication services on offer through our Online Bespoke Worktop Tool. Now is definitely the right time to try our Online Bespoke Worktop Tool, too, as if you order any fabrication services through the tool this month, you will get a further 25% off any customisations that we carry out. That means your drainage and hotrod grooves could be completed for only £63.75 if you order before November 30th. If you need any further information regarding our fabrication services, either read through some of our Fabrication Information Guides or contact us to speak to one of our helpful advisers. All the best, Ben @ Worktop Express
