“What is a butt joint on a wood kitchen workbench?” Question of the Week 22.10.16
“What is a butt joint on a wood kitchen workbench?”
This week we spoke with Dara in Worthing, who had some questions about bespoke customisations for his wood kitchen workbench.
“On your wood worktop cutting service page it states that you can fit worktops together with a butt joint. What sort of joint is this?”
Thank you for getting in touch and for taking an interest in our bespoke worktop service; this efficient in-house service is provided by our own skilled team of experts, who have years of experience working with solid wood products.
A butt joint is designed to join two worktops together, either side by side or perpendicularly. To create this joint, three apertures are routed into the underside of both worktops. Once on site, connector bolts are placed between each ‘pair’ of grooves and tightened until the two worktops are joined securely (these bolts are included within the price when you order a butt joint).
Butt joints are recommended for wooden work surfaces (although surfaces made from other materials can be joined with mitre and 45° joints). This is due to the fact that wood naturally expands and contracts a little as heat and moisture levels vary in its surroundings, and butt joints allow for this movement without damage to the worktop.
You can find out even more about this type of joint in our Butt Joint Nutshell Guide.
