Telford is a large new town within the county of Shropshire, located 13 miles south-east of Shrewsbury, and was named after engineer Thomas Telford, who engineered many of the road and rail networks in the region. The town combines areas earmarked for agricultural and industrial purposes, as well as a number of smaller settlements such as Wellington, Oakengates and Madeley.
Nearby Ironbridge Gorge is a picturesque tourist destination as well as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A deep gorge formed by the River Severn, the site is rich in raw materials such as coal, iron ore, limestone and clay, used for the production of iron, tiling and porcelain, which can easily be transported out to sea thanks to the vast expanse of the river. The iron bridge itself opened in 1781, and was the first arched bridge of its size to be built in cast iron anywhere in the world.
Thanks to the Telford International Centre (TIC), the town is home to one of the few ice skating rinks in the West Midlands, and the venue houses a number of halls and events spaces. The TIC plays host to various concerts throughout the year, as well as private parties.
