Like many others in the north west of England, Stockport grew into the town it is today throughout the Industrial Revolution, when it was famous for cotton and silk production. By the end of the 19th Century, it was seen as the centre of the country's hatting industry, exporting more than six million hats around the world.
Two rivers: the Tame and the Goyt, converge in Stockport to become the river Mersey, over which is one of the area's more famous man-made landmarks - the Stockport Viaduct. This 34m high structure carries four railway tracks over the river, and features as a background in many paintings by well-known artist L. S. Lowry.
