Why are your worktops 635mm rather than 600mm?

Question

“I’m considering ordering one of your worktops, but they are provided at 635mm which is a little deeper than the cabinets I’ve already got installed. Is there a reason why there doesn’t appear to be a standard width, and can you cut them down to size for me?”

Answer

Thanks for sending your question in.

Worktops can be purchased online at widths anywhere between 600 and 650mm, whilst most of our solid wood and laminate worktops come in a standard width of 635mm.

We have found that 635mm width worktops are compatible with all major kitchen cabinet suppliers as well as giving additional width for uneven walls.

Additionally, the character of our natural timber product means that it is subject to slight movement as atmospheric moisture levels in a kitchen vary. Some manufacturers will provide 600mm hardwood worktops, and whilst they may be initially slightly cheaper, they may be far more expensive in the long run if the worktop retracts back above the cabinet doors, leaving no overhang.

Because of this natural movement, it’s also advised to consider leaving an expansion gap between the worktop and adjoining walls, with the aid of a wooden upstand to hide the space. If your kitchen cabinets happen to be less deep than standard kitchen cabinets, then our worktops can be cut down to size.

Our fabrication team are capable of making just about any reasonable adjustment to a solid wood worktop, so cutting your worktop to size is no problem – but do be aware of what we’ve mentioned about wood’s movement before going ahead.

Straight cuts can be made from £15 per cut, after which we will pre-oil the worktop at a rate of £12 per metre. Various other bespoke alterations can be made to your worktops to allow them to fit into any shape of kitchen, alongside the addition of beautiful finishing touches such as a smooth pencil edge profile or drainage grooves.
