For this reason, we supply end caps as part of our bespoke service. Produced by cutting a worktop across the width and then joining this offcut to the end of the required worktop, end caps are invaluable for preservation and also make a stylish addition to your solid wood worktop. Protecting your worktop:

From heat…

Solid wood end caps meld beautifully with your worktops and provide essential protection to the end grains. Heat can cause the ends of the wood to dry out and then split – but with an end cap (which should be fitted on all worktop sides that will be in close contact with the heat) this will not be a cause for concern. The end cap will act as a buffer, shielding your worktop from any damage. Worktops set adjacent to Aga or range ovens must be fitted with an end cap.

…and the general environment:

We would recommend that this option is considered for freestanding units, even if these are not situated next to a source of extreme heat. In the long term, end caps are very useful in preventing worktops from warping or bowing (which is more possible – and noticeable – in a freestanding feature such as an island).
