With all this lush greenery around and the odd hint of sunshine (!) our thoughts turn toward the environment – and we wouldn’t be surprised if the summer months had left you feeling a bit green-fingered, too! Never fear, with Worktop Express® you can rest assured that our solid counters are all carefully and sustainably sourced; indeed, this month’s top pick – Caramel Bamboo – is a great example of our strong commitment to environmental preservation.

As a material, bamboo is hygienic, hardwearing, and fantastically sustainable. While most timber species take decades to mature fully, bamboo crops are harvested and replanted every five to six years. Bamboo also makes a wonderfully unique worktop: constructed from compressed individual sections (rather than timber staves), bamboo worktops have a neat finish with a straight grain pattern interlaced with sporadic nodes. Our unique caramelisation process accentuates these characterful elements and transforms bamboo’s pale golden colour to a rich caramel.

Better still, Worktop Express® caramel bamboo worktops start at just £125 – astounding value, if we do say so ourselves! For more information take a look at our caramel bamboo worktops page or get in touch; we’d be happy to answer any questions that you might have on this worktop wonder.

Google Plus

We’ve always considered ourselves a cool older sibling to the Solid Wood Kitchen Cabinets bunch (our sister site): so imagine our shock when we realised that they had joined Google Plus ahead of us, leaving us trailing in the social media stakes…

In all seriousness, it was time we got Google Plus-friendly: this social network is now the second largest in the world, with 500 million users. Just think of all the solid wood worktop stories we could have been posting… or the ones we were potentially missing out on! Think of the weird and wonderful wood uses being reported via the Stream!

We simply had to get our page up right away. So, without further ado, here it is! We hope you’ll check it out ; and don’t forget, be it via phone, email, Facebook, Twitter or Google Plus, we’re always happy to hear from you.

As you know, here at Worktop Express® HQ we’re always on the lookout for weird and wacky uses of our favourite natural material, wood.

So when we heard about the work of Israeli designers Orli Tesler and Itamar Mendelovitch we just had to give them a shout-out! One of their most recent projects has incorporated wood in an unusual and incredibly creative way: as a textile.

That’s right, these acclaimed designers make purses… out of wood! Careful research has led to the development of a process that renders wood soft and flexible; the designers cite origami as an inspiration for their ‘folding’ technique, which was discovered through ‘seeing how far it could bend till we came up with a way to hold the wood in place without breaking as we folded it.’

The result is a serious of wooden clutches, geometric and angular in design, which are being lauded for their delicate resilience and unique style. The designers themselves have nothing but praise for wood’s natural integrity: ‘We both have always had a close connection to wood as an organic material. We feel that wood helps connect the body to nature and is very Zen. Every material gives off a certain vibration or chi. We tried to make the clutch feel good, not just look good. We hope that people who wear our clutches feel the same way.’

We couldn’t agree more: whether your business is wearable wood or wooden worktops, the innate charm and beauty of solid wood is something we can all get behind!

Got a ‘wacky’ wood story to share with us? We’d love to hear from you: simply send a contact message or give us a call on 0845 22 22 644.

Solid Worktop Chopping Boards

New season, new start – now summer is here (finally) the kitchen world has swept into action, rounding up the season’s best buys and forecasting trends.

Fortunately, these insights contain some good news for worktop fans: solid wood remains ever fashionable! The Independent’s ’50 Best Kitchen Gear’ article lists solid wood accessories such as chopping boards amongst its top picks (which we can happily supply – click here to learn more!) and a Consumer News survey records hardwood kitchen furniture as one of the most popular choices for consumers over the last year.

‘Shabby chic’ seems to be a buzz-word of the moment, with more and more people opting for rustic kitchens with an organic feel. A solid wood worktop in classic oak or beech would be a great start, and to round off the look we’d recommend a solid oak cabinet – head over to our sister site www.solidwoodkitchencabinets.co.uk for some inspiration. You can accentuate the ‘shabby chic’ aspect by customising your cabinet frontals; Solid Wood Kitchen Cabinets offer a natural sanded finish that could be just the ticket.

Finally – and fantastically – what about a bit of 3D printing?! The latest gadget from the planet’s leading scientists is this type of printer, which has been used by NASA for the past few years to make parts for their spacecrafts and is now being fine-tuned to encompass other areas. Food, clothing, and musical instruments are just a few of the things being touted for our 3D-printed-future. Now, while our natural solid wood worktops aren’t something that could be replicated by such a device – each one is unique and organically constructed – we could see the potential for this device in kitchen design. The machine could sit pretty atop a solid wenge worktop or perhaps an American walnut, and every time you fancied changing your colour scheme, hey presto! Off you go to print out some new teatowels, cutlery, a teapot or two…

Wishful thinking, maybe, but pretty cool!

Well, that’s enough from us: we hope you’ve enjoyed this little update – and if you happen to hear about any new trends or gadgets that you think deserve a mention in the future, let us know and we’ll add it to the blog pile.
