All About Belfast Sinks

The ‘Belfast’ sink is the most common name for a ceramic/porcelain sink set under the work surface. A traditional, clean design, the Belfast sink has become increasingly popular in recent years.

History:

Its recent surge in popularity has proved that this kind of sink will never go out of style, but there are many theories regarding the origin of its name. One popular argument concerns the overflow. Belfast was known for its plentiful water supply, and the Belfast sink originally had a Weir overflow built in; by contrast, London sinks – a city in which water was scarce – had no overflow.

Wide bowl:

The sink is blessed with a spacious bowl which makes a really handy washing-up space – perfect for washing those more fragile, large, or oddly shaped items – and also looks very attractive within the kitchen. The surface of the sink is very sturdy and dense, though, so take care when putting breakable items in/on top of each other!

Easy Cleaning:

These sinks are ideal for busy kitchens – a quick wipeover with a damp cloth is usually enough to leave the surface looking sparkling clean.

Preparing your Worktop:

As previously mentioned, the Worktop Express® bespoke cutting team are on hand for your Belfast sink cut-out needs! In all seriousness, we do advise utilising a professional service to prepare the necessary aperture. When provided with the external and internal dimensions of your sink, Worktop Express® will route apertures exactly to your requirements. Final thoughts:

When utilising our fabrication service for a Belfast sink, the following guidelines apply (unless specified otherwise):

We recommend that the front edge of a Belfast sink should be level with the front of the worktop.
A Belfast sink cut-out will have a 25mm internal radius as standard (although we can also accommodate bespoke requests with ease).
A pencil top profile will be applied to the internal edge of the sink cut-out as standard (although you can also opt for a different profile if preferred).
A 7/10 mm overhang is recommended.
The overhang will be applied to the back, left and right-hand edges of the cutout.
